What is DHT and Why Do We Block It?

DHT, or Dihydrotestosterone, is a naturally occurring hormone that is a by-product of testosterone–but women, don’t think you’re off the hook! You have testosterone, too, and DHT is present in you as well.

An enzyme in the hair follicle’s sebaceous glands converts testosterone to DHT. This happens in both women and men, even though women have less testosterone than men. DHT is the hormone that is the cause of male pattern baldness and female pattern hair loss. Androgenetic alopecia (the aforementioned conditions) is responsible for hair loss in 50 million men and 40 million women in America, making it the most common cause of hair loss by an order of magnitude. 

To better understand, think of this: all hair goes through a growing process. But during that process, as the hormone begins to work on us (usually as we age) the DHT builds up in the follicles and disrupts the growing cycle. DHT causes the follicles to grow at a slower rate. Hair becomes thinner, more fragile and lightens in color (grays) and eventually the follicles are overwhelmed by the DHT and shut down completely.
