What is Propecia and how is it used?

Propecia is a prescription medicine used to treat the symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), male pattern hair loss (androgenic alopecia).

Propecia belongs to a class of drugs called 5-Alpha-Reductase Inhibitors.

Uses

This medication is used to treat male pattern baldness (androgenetic alopecia) at the crown and in the middle of the scalp. This medication works by decreasing the amount of a natural body hormone (DHT). Decreasing the amount of DHT leads to increased hair regrowth and slower hair loss. Hair growth on other parts of the body is not affected by finasteride.

DESCRIPTION

PROPECIA (finasteride) tablets contain finasteride as the active ingredient. Finasteride, a synthetic 4-azasteroid compound, is a specific inhibitor of steroid Type II 5α-reductase, an intracellular enzyme that converts the androgen testosterone into 5α-dihydrotestosterone (DHT).

The chemical name of finasteride is N-tert-Butyl-3-oxo-4-aza-5α-androst-1-ene-17β-carboxamide. The empirical formula of finasteride is C23H36N2O2 and its molecular weight is 372.55.

PROPECIA (finasteride) tablets are film-coated tablets for oral administration. Each tablet contains 1 mg of finasteride and the following inactive ingredients: lactose monohydrate, microcrystalline cellulose, pregelatinized starch, sodium starch glycolate, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, hydroxypropyl cellulose, titanium dioxide, magnesium stearate, talc, docusate sodium, yellow ferric oxide, and red ferric oxide.

How it Works

Baldness is caused when an enzyme changes testosterone into something called dihydrotestosterone (DHT). The enzyme that transforms testosterone into DHT is known as 5-α-reductase (5-α-R). DHT, in turn, affects some hair follicles that are sensitive to the enzyme, binding to the follicles and causing them to shrink and produce thinner, shorter hairs. Eventually the follicles will stop hair production entirely.

Propecia (finasteride) stops the production of DHT in the body and helps slow hair loss in about 88 percent of men who take the drug, according to the American Academy of Dermatology.

The drug’s label instructs users to take one 1 milligram tablet once daily, with or without meals.

Within 24 hours of taking a dose of Propecia, the concentration of DHT drops by 65 percent. The full effects of daily Propecia use can take three months or more to appear.

Is Propecia safe long term?

It is safe to continue taking Propecia over long periods of time.

How effective is Propecia

For most men, Propecia takes 3-6 months of daily use to show effects. The active ingredient (finasteride) has been shown to be effective in preventing hair loss in men in 90% of cases. In some cases, men experience hair regrowth.

Propecia will not work faster or better if you take more than 1 tablet a day.

How do you know if Propecia is working?

After 3-6 months of taking Propecia you might be able to see that your hairline has not receded further or perhaps some regrowth in zones you had previously lost hair.
